We decided we wanted to do this trip together around a year ago, which gave us both time to get some work squeezed in and save up the pennies. After agreeing roughly where we wanted to explore - the task was upon us of planning how on earth we could make it happen.
We had heard other people discuss this 'Round The World' flight ticket, but were unsure of how it really works. We went into Trailfinders to discuss our options on a dark wintery day at the beginning of 2017, unable to sit still with the thought that this trip was actually going to happen. Trailfinders explained that each major airline does their own version of the ticket, but that we were far too early to think about booking it because the flights we would be wanting to book, weren't released yet.
We then went into STA Travel, who seemed to know a lot more. The basis of this type of ticket is that you must fly in one direction, e.g. you can't fly back on yourself. The ticket price ranges depending on your mileage, route, and number of stops. STA Travel were also able to offer us a 'Multi-Flex Pass' add-on, which basically means that you have the freedom to change the date of your flights without having to pay the airline fees. This meant that the lady booking it for us was able to put in dummy dates for our flights, so that we were able to book it there and then. The Multi-Flex Pass then allowed us to change the dummy dates to the actual dates that we wanted to fly, as and when they became available. STA Travel were SO helpful with this, and did it pretty much without requiring any effort from us. Our final flight route included in the ticket is :
LONDON - MEXICO CITY, BUENOS AIRES - AUCKLAND, AUCKLAND - MELBOURNE, CAIRNS - BALI, BALI - LONDON
Although we may have to book smaller internal flights out with the ticket, the total value for all of those flights plus the Multi-Flex Pass was only £2100!! We paid a £50 deposit, with the remaining balance to be paid 10 weeks before departure.
Round The World tickets can be amazing, they can save you a lot of time and effort, and more importantly - money. However if you're unsure of your route or time frame they may not be for you, as they come with a lot of rules and can be quite set in stone. For more information definitely go into your closest STA Travel, as for us they made it super easy.
Above and beyond the actual flight ticket, we aim to leave a lot of the planning open. After all, you never know who you will meet, what you will see, and what specific places you will love. Too much pre-planning can be detrimental, and leave you disappointed at leaving places too early or not spending enough time somewhere you like. Although we know a rough time outline, we're going to leave things like hostel booking until a few days before we arrive in each place. Gives us that extra freedom and availability to do whatever we want, whenever we want!
